Female Style: No, I’m Not a Whore
As a rule of thumb, it’s best to err on the conservative side of the spectrum when it comes to picking out your outfit. No, of course, as strong, educated, motivated women we don’t need to perpetuate unfair societal norms and expectations about the Piety of Woman, but fourth wave feminism is all about choices. So choose wisely in the wardrobe, sisters. Also, remember that there’s no clear separation between work and play in the expat world, so how you dress for the latter will inevitably have some consequences for how people view you in the former.
If you’re in a country where women cover up, do so also. Burqas are unnecessary, but invest in a lot of lightweight headscarves that can double as shawls or picnic blankets in other contexts. Elsewhere, especially hot climates, easily mix-and-matched skirts can get you far. Beware, however: mini-skirts might get you further than you’d intended. Pants are fine too; they can just get hot. It’s really a matter of personal taste.
That said, defer often to local preference when it comes to style. Pay particular attention to the clothing for which you receive compliments. If said compliments come from a woman, rewear the outfit often. If they come from a man, perhaps consider adjusting the neckline up and the hemline down.
As with men, sturdy fabrics and/or inexpensive (and thus easily replaceable) materials are usually best. Delicates are, by their nature, delicate and unlikely to last that long under indelicate conditions. Irony and fashion statements don’t translate well about 99% of the time. You can be “individual” in your choice of jewelry, if you must, but efforts to stand out on the fashion front rarely carry with them as much glamour or success as they might in Paris or Prague.
